Anonymous activists arrested in Cambodia
The two arrested are suspects of attacking official websites of the country and can be punished by up to two years imprisonment for piracy.
Two activists from the group Anonymous were arrested in
Cambodia accused of hacking the official website of the Government,
following a joint investigation by the local police and the FBI, local
media reported today.
Tha Bun King Mongkolpanha, known as “Black Cyber” and Cho
SengHeng, known as “Zoro”, both 21 and students at a private university
in Phnom Penh, were arrested on 7 July, Cambodian police said in a
statement quoted by the Phnom Penh Post.
The arrests were made following an eight-month
investigation which began after several government agencies had reported
that their official websites had been attacked.
According to authorities, over 30 websites of public and
private institutions were the target of attacks by the Anonymous group,
including the National Electoral Commission, the Anti-Corruption Unit of
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the press service of the Cabinet.
Activists began their campaign of cyber attacks in a period
of time when demonstrations by the opposition are taking place to
denounce alleged election fraud in July last year, which have been
handled with violent repression by the authorities.
About the arrested, who are under detention, were presented
three charges related to computer hacking, which could result in a
prison sentence of up to two years.
The Cambodian government prepares its first law against
cybercrime, a proposal criticized by human rights advocacy groups and
activists who believe that it seeks to silence criticism of the
opposition.
